So you have a website with great content, but no visitors! What do you do next? How do you go about promoting your website and getting people to hear about it? Advertise of course! But how do you start advertising; where do you advertise; what kind of advertising will work best for you? There are so many ideas that it can undoubtedly be confusing to sort through them all and find out what will work best in your situation.

Send out newsletters; join forums – leave messages along with your url; print up fliers for local distribution, post banners on related sites; create an affiliate program. There are pop-ups, search engine keywords, emails and ezines. Remember; avoid spamming people as it only causes problems, is hardly noticed and generally disliked.

Does banner advertising work? Do people actually click on those generally annoying banners? The trick is to place them in the right places. Find websites that have similar or related topics to yours, also, don’t make you banner scream BANNER, but rather have it look like a friendly and helpful suggestion. The key is enticing people to your site, not scaring them into accidentally clicking on something.

Affiliate advertising is another good technique. Have affiliate sites direct you traffic on a pay per sale (or pay per click) rate. You might pay more on a pay per sale rate, but you only pay for the visitors that made a difference. Visitors who don’t buy on their first visit may come back though, so the pay per click may be worth it as well.
